Anand Panin was born in Bangkok and completed his secondary education at Vajiravudh College in 1955. In 1958, he earned a diploma from the Art School of the Department of Fine Arts (now the College of Fine Arts). Subsequently, in 1962, he earned a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Painting, Sculpture, and Printmaking at Silpakorn University. He conducted research in art through an international program at Cite Internationale des Arts, Paris, in 1967, and received a certificate in Art Studies from the S.W. Hayter Institute in Paris in 1966.
Anand Panin has been the recipient of numerous national awards and honors, such as the 2nd Class Honorary Silver Medal (Painting) at the 11th National Art Exhibition, the 3rd Class Honorary Bronze Medal (Painting) at the 12th and 13th National Art Exhibitions, the 2nd Class Honorary Silver Medal (Painting) at the 14th National Art Exhibition, and the 3rd Class Honorary Bronze Medal (Painting) at the 15th National Art Exhibition. Additionally, he was awarded the 1st Class Honorary Gold Medal (Painting) at the 19th National Art Exhibition and the 2nd Class Honorary Silver Medal (Painting) at the 18th National Art Exhibition. The Ministry of Culture designated his 1969 painting as one of the most significant works of contemporary Thai art during the reign of King Rama IX in the third decade (1959-1968) in 2019. In the same year, he was recognized as a National Artist in Visual Arts (Painting).
In 1960, Anand Panin initiated his exhibition of his work at the 11th National Art Exhibition. He participated in a number of solo and group exhibitions in Thailand and abroad, including his first solo exhibition at Wang Suan Phak Kard in 1965. Notable solo exhibitions include those at GALLERY DU HUAT PAVE’ and CITE INTERNATIONALE DES ARTS in Paris, France, in 1966, GALLERY DE LEISEL in Melbourne, Australia, in 1972, and KEAN’S ART GALLERY, Fifth Avenue, New York, USA. ”Rhythm of Heartbeat” and ”Where do We Come From” were recent solo exhibitions that were exhibited at MOCA BANGKOK in 2018 and 2022, respectively.
Each painting by Anand Panin begins with an exploration of the relationship between art creation and the social-cultural context of the time. He aims to create ideas or inspiration through the integration of art knowledge with historical, cultural, artistic, human, and natural elements, as well as philosophy, beliefs, and symbolic systems. His work emphasizes communicating with the thoughts and memories of the viewer, allowing for diverse interpretations based on personal and shared experiences between the viewer and the artist’s inspiration. Anand Panin continues to create art and plays a significant role in promoting and developing the art scene in Thailand.
