Sylvie Blum

Sylvie Blum was born in 1967 in Taxenbach, Austria, and currently lives and works in Los Angeles, United States. She studied art at the Mannheim College of Art, graduating in 1988, before continuing her studies at the Trier College of Art in Germany in 1990. Over the course of her career, she has received international recognition for her work in fine art photography. She was appointed Art Ambassador for the city of Cortona, Italy, and was nominated in the Professional Fashion category of the first Annual Color Awards.

Blum has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and Asia. Recent group exhibitions include Holiday Edition at Preiss Fine Arts in 2025, Women by Women at The Photogallery AB from 2024 to 2025, Chromatic Bloom: A Summer Prelude and Spring Fling: Vintage Classics and Modern Icons at Preiss Fine Arts in 2024, and DNA at 29 Arts in Progress in the same year. Her notable solo exhibitions include Naked Beauty at Echo Fine Arts in 2022, Naked Beauty at MOCA BANGKOK in 2020, Power Meets Poetry with Giovanni Gastel at Immagis Fine Art Photography in 2018, Sylvie Blum Photography at Brucie Collections in 2016, and Naked Beauties at Fahey/Klein Gallery in Los Angeles in 2012.

Blum began her career as a professional fashion model, working in the industry for more than sixteen years. Her collaborations with photographers including Helmut Newton and Günter Blum introduced her to photographic lighting, composition, and image-making from within the studio environment. After beginning her collaboration with Günter Blum in 1991, she studied photographic techniques and darkroom processes alongside him. Following his death in 1997, she developed an independent practice, initially producing self-portraits with a Polaroid SX-70 camera. Her first artist book, Venus, was published in 2000, and works from the series were later presented at Christie’s New York. She has since published a number of artist books centred on the human form.

Blum’s photographic language is shaped by her experience on both sides of the camera. Her understanding of pose, gesture, proportion, and physical presence informs images in which the body is treated as a visual structure in relation to light and space. Drawing on traditions of early twentieth-century photography, her work is characterised by precise composition, strong tonal control, and sculptural form. Series such as Naked Beauty and Big Cat reflect her continuing interest in the relationship between the human figure, nature, and photographic representation. Her works are held in institutional and private collections, including MOCA BANGKOK, the J.P. Morgan Collection, the Google Art Collection, and private collections in Europe and the United States. Since relocating to Los Angeles in 2005, she has continued to develop her photographic practice at WhiteBox Studio in Hollywood.
