“Thai Country Living”, series of woodcut by Praphan Srisuta
MOCA BANGKOK has a substantial collection of over 400 woodcut prints created by Praphan Srisuta, a renowned Thai artist specializing in this medium. The “Thai Country Living” series has been specifically chosen to exemplify the aesthetic appeal and prominent features of woodcut printing during the initial phase of Thai contemporary art, a time when Thai artists had the opportunity to engage in the study of academic art under the guidance of Professor Silpa Bhirasri.
Praphan Srisuta furthered his education at Berlin, Germany after completing his studies at Silpakom University. Pen drawings were used to portray his deep longing for his homeland throughout the period spanning from 1965 to 1966. Upon his arrival in Thalland in 1967, he made the deliberate decision to select a total of 90 drawings that he held in high regard, with the intention of reproducing them as woodcut prints.
15 single-color woodblock prints were selected for display. Demonstrate feelings and thoughts and the truth from the artist’s experiences in rural life, the Ping River Basin, his birthplace, and varlous rural areas in Thalland. The artist conveys the relationship between humans and the environment. Telling stories about people’s lifestyles, works, and folk games. The air traces are created by the wood carving chisel grooves carved into the mold. Thai master artists weave anatomical shapes of people, animals, objects, and landscapes along with proportions and vibrations like the poetry of country life into woodcut legends.
Born in 1939. As one of Professor Silpa Bhirasri’s students, he earned an Assoclate of Arts 1-3 from Silpakom University’s Faculty of Painting, In 1964, he studied in Germany at Werikkunst Schulz Hannover. From 1965 to 1966, he attended Berlin Hochschule für Bildende KUnste, and In 1971, he earned a Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) from Cranbrook Academy of Arts in Michigan, United States.
